This is how I identify myself, above all other things. There are a lot of terms I identify with (things like feminist or atheist). But none of those touch my identity as a scientist.
I study science because I am a scientist. It isn’t the other way around. There are a lot of scientists in the world and maybe some of them will grow up to study art or history or maybe they’ll never study anything at all. And they will STILL BE SCIENTISTS.
They will crave an understanding of the world around them.
They will not be satisfied with explanation without fact or reason.
They will value empirical evidence and experimental methodology.
They will define themselves by their curiosity and their desire for knowledge.
They will ask “how does it work?” and when they cannot get an answer they will ask “how do I find out?”.
Science is a quest. It isn’t an elite cloud that you get to because you happened to be privileged enough to get an education. It isn’t the “ivory tower”. It is everywhere. It is inside and out of every atom in the universe.
Anyone can be a scientist. I have been one for as long as I can remember.
Maybe you’ve been one too and you never knew because someone told you otherwise. Well guess what. They were wrong.
